Music has always played a huge part in American culture. From The Beatles to Bon Jovi, we all can identify with a certain brand of music influencing our lives. Where do all of these famous musicians start out? Famous artists we all know and love all started out at the bottom of the ladder, playing shows in clubs and local venues. Begging people to come to their shows, being rejected by record labels, not reaping any benefits from performing their passion except gaining a fan or two. The local music scene is a world many people are not aware of. Cities like Wilmington, NC house many music venues, places where you can go and, for a small price, see genuinely talented bands and artists perform. The experience is not that of a concert, it is far more personal. The bands and songwriters are right in front of you; there is no such thing as Auto Tune or any showy spectacles. It is just pure music. I recently had the pleasure of hearing Gene Gregory a local songwriter with a fresh new sound. My first impression of Gene was that he is very down to earth. He is a very talented performer but still remains humble. He loves what he does and it show through his performances. He does not perform for the money like famous artists; he performs for his fans and for himself. Gene pours his heart out on a stage for the people who show up and his performances have substance thats draws people in and keeps them wanting more. Unfortunately, music is an expensive passion. He must buy his own equipment and pay a pretty penny to eventually record his own album. His destiny is in his own hands you might say. When you go to see a local performer like Gene, not only are you helping out a local artist from your community, you also experience real talent. There is no such thing as Auto Tune on local stages; just hard work and perseverance. Gene knows that "Music is the hardest kind of art. It doesn't hang up on a wall and wait to be stared at and enjoyed by the passersby. It's communication. It's hours and hours being put into a work of art that may only last, in reality, for a few moments...but if done well, and truly appreciated, it lasts in our hearts forever. That's the art Gene is creating. it definitely deserves an audience!
